What it’s really like to do a Marketing placement at PwC

I first joined PwC in 2014, 19 years old and with bags of enthusiasm but very little knowledge about PwC or marketing. It was the start of my placement – a year out from the University of Bath to test out the world of work. Now back at PwC and helping out with the placement programme in my spare time, here’s my thoughts on what it’s really like. My 11 months were a whirlwind. I was based in Manchester (other options are Birmingham, Leeds and London) and put into a fantastic team of 10 people. The first few weeks were tough as I got to grips with everything and my team got to know me, what I was interested in and what I was capable of. I had no background in Marketing – I was studying Economics and International Development but was really interested by the job description and what I’d read about PwC as a global, diverse, market-leading firm – and so I had to learn fast. But my team and the network I got through the placement programme (career coach, “buddy” and the other placement students) were all super supportive and there to answer all of my questions, no matter how daft.

During my 11 months, I got up to all sorts from managing events for 50 people to training others on using social media, writing content for blogs and newsletters and supporting on proposals to win new work. I shadowed other parts of the business, which then led to me coming back on the Consulting Graduate Scheme. I spent a day helping local kids from inner city schools as an usher at the PwC Pantomime, volunteered by re-planting green spaces in the local community and represented the company at a school careers fair. I also managed to go to a few fancy awards dinners, a Premier League football game and have regular socials with my team, including one at Christmas when I somehow persuaded them all to dress up as elves (photo below…).

The work was fast paced, and once I’d proved myself the level of responsibility I got was brilliant. I certainly wasn’t there to make the teas or do the admin! Although there was a core book of work – mostly digital marketing, content creation and campaigns/events – I could put my own spin on it and also did a lot of teaching and training others. I’m not sure I would’ve thought before I started that I’d be giving training to and having 1-1 meetings with partners and directors, but somehow that’s what I was doing. I think that speaks volumes for the fantastic team I had around me and the company’s inclusive culture.

All in all, it’s a great programme, a fab company and an exciting time to join Sales and Marketing with all the tech and transformation that’s going on, but it’s definitely not for you if just want a chilled year off from uni. There is a lot to take in, and there may be days where you are so shattered that you accidentally get the train home in the wrong direction twice in one week because your brain is just a bit fried (yup, did that). And although there is so much opportunity at PwC, you need to be proactive and go out and get it – it won’t just fall in your lap.

So if you want to learn about marketing, or just business more generally, are proactive, want to work with lovely and super bright people, want to be part of a company that works with every type of business, supports its people and is leading the way in encouraging diversity, flexibility, social mobility and giving back to the community, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place to start.
